Musical Greetings
The occasion of a friend’s 75th birthday inspired me to design a musical greeting—I used Finale and tinkered with layering and beaming notes until the resulting composition spelled out my message. I was delighted to discover that the piece also sounded quite interesting, sort of pseudo-Stravinsky. I reworked the greeting for several birthdays, eventually added the traditionally Happy Birthday tune on top, and extended the composition with “Many Happy Returns.” I generated an entire Musical Alphabet from which I can conveniently draw letters/bars to construct a new message. The little movie below was part of an electronic greeting assortment which I presented to the first friend’s wife, when she turned 70.
